The Ambulance Service – it is important in the public services because Ambulance services help many people with serious or life-threatening conditions.
They also provide a range of other urgent and planned healthcare and transport services. Communication - High-quality communication skills are very important for working in the uniformed public services. You are educated these skills the instant you start basic training. Communication can take place in a number of ways, Such as: * Non verbal communication * Verbal communication * Visual communication The public service skills are important in The Ambulance service because For example, Non verbal is used for people who have hearing aids or have any other disabilities.
Verbal communication is used mainly for people who have sight disabilities. Visual communication is used as written or drawn pictures that represent words. In public services non verbal communication would be useful if someone was deaf and you could use sign language, they might need to send an order to another person so the deaf person would either lip-read or sign. Non verbal communication- is where body language and sign language are used to communicate effectively in a one to one situation or a group situation.
It is a form a communication that does not require the use of verbal communication. For example, non verbal communication is used mainly for people with deaf disabilities, so you would use sign language or some other form of communication towards them if you were a member of the ambulance service and you are helping the people. Verbal communication - Verbal communication is used when there are orders sent from one person to another or by direct speech using equipment such as: TV, Radio etc.
For example, verbal communication you would use if a person could not see, so you would use words or you could use equipment like radios in the ambulance service. Visual communication - Visual communication is where writing or drawing pictures are used. For example, in visual communication you would use pictures to represent words to a person maybe who couldn’t speak. A method such as Makaton would be useful as this is a form of communication that involves pictures to symbolize words.
This would be ideal to use for people who have hearing disabilities but not so ideal for people with sight difficulties in the ambulance service. Professional and personal skills - Professional skills involves a number of skills that a person may already have due to their inheritance from their natural abilities but during a period of time could also develop and improve to their skills. The skills are:- * Punctuality/timekeeping * Pride of appearance * Behaviour
For example, in ambulance services people or recruits may already know some knowledge or skills that have been inherited but whereas they are in public services they ought to improve or expand on their own learning or skills. Punctuality and timekeeping - Punctuality is where being on time is very important during work or anywhere anytime in your life. You’re not late; prompt. For example, if in ambulance services people intend to arrive late. Although sometimes they get away with it, but they leave a bad reputation to the ambulance service they work at.
If an ambulance is to achieve and work capably, lateness should not be put up with and sometimes if the ambulance was to arrive late at a certain house they could officially put a person’s life at risk. Pride of appearances - In public services, first impression is vital as an employee so that the judgements made can be positive. Uniform is a key area where you can take pride in your appearance. For example, when you enter your interview, you want your first impression to be positive not negative so you would wear a suit or something else formal.
You want this because if it was negative then the judgements made might carry on throughout your interview as this might affect you your job and you might not be successful. In the ambulance it may also affect the public because of the way you dress, if you dressed informal or wore unsuitable clothes to an emergency mission the people would have a negative effect on you. Behaviour - If your behaviour is inappropriate, the public might have a wrong impression towards you, they may feel the service they receive is not rofessional and they have been let down by the public services. For example, inappropriate behaviour would not be suitable, for example, in the ambulance service; if your attitude was awful towards patients and they had been in an accident, it wouldn’t very much if your attitude wasn’t correct. It would make them panic even more. Discipline - This is important in a teamwork matter. To be effective in a team, every individual in a team must obey all lawful orders that are given.
Self-discipline is often the best form of discipline self discipline mean self control and having pride in yourself. So if you were a high ranked officer in the ambulance service, you would need self-discipline to run your trainees as well as discipline. Problem solving - Many problems you may come across within the public services could be both dangerous to you and others, therefore solving problems quickly and efficiently is very important.
You would need to solve the problems fairly quickly. For example, if there was a debate between the ambulance teams and they had different answers to different question and caused an argument on which solution they should most stick to, they should all talk the situation out and see what happens next that every person in the team agrees on. Co-operation - This is about working together to achieve a common goal and supporting each other in achieving that goal.
For example, in this you want to help the people who are shy and uncomfortable about the situation, so you could talk to them slowly and make them feel more relaxed so they can join in and act as a team, to achieve their target. Conflict management - Emotions can often lead to conflict, so you would want to deal with the situation fairly quickly so the mess doesn’t get worse. For example, If two troops were in a fight they would want to sort their problem out in the safe area before entering the battle field because if they don’t they might kill each other.
