Neal Gabler attacks entertainment and argues that its effect will eventually “involve our country in ruin,” and although that is somewhat correct, entertainment is also a vital piece in the growth of society. There are many different aspects and parts to a society; we cannot attribute one thing, such as entertainment, to its destruction. What Gabler fails to do is define entertainment. What may be considered entertaining for Taylor Swift may have been considered boring by Albert Einstein. And what may be fun for Nicki Minaj may have been considered a waste of time by Gregor Mendel.

Different people seek different forms of entertainment, although throughout any form, as with anything in life, there is an upside and a downside. Music can be relaxing and soothing; but play it too loud and it harms your hearing. Watch the History channel and learn a thing or two, or watch Jersey Shore and become influenced by their outlandish behavior. Whatever a person’s entertainment choice, whether it be watching TV, working out, and listening to music, or going out with friends, having drinks, and gambling, entertainment only becomes destructive once an individual is on the verge of addiction.

A person eating a piece of cake now and then doesn’t make them unhealthy but eating a few pieces on a regular basis may lead to obesity. Our society simply needs to know the right choices to make. “Should I sit in front of the television all day? ” Or, “should I watch some TV and read a book afterward? ” Everything can be destructive without self-control. Teenagers, whose generation is becoming more and more immersed in technology, should ask themselves these questions and know to choose the healthier option, because watching TV all day can be more harmful than a man that has a drink or two but knows his limits.

Entertainment does not “ruin” society but is an important piece in its growth. We work hard all day and turn to entertainment to relax and relieve stress. Without it we would be like a machine that never gets shut off and eventually overheats and burns out. We need the resting period so that our minds won’t burn out! If our minds never leave work mode we will be entirely drained out and exhausted. Entertainment is used as an outlet to recharge by the enjoyment we receive from it.

Take me for example, after a long day at school I’m not feeling up to doing homework, after having received a break from the constant flow of new information, but after a couple hours of being online and listening to music I’m ready to get back to work. Entertainment often sparks creativity and at times helps me perform better in my work. Gregor Mendel’s form of entertainment was experimentation and this resulted in the discovery of genetics which led to much of what we know about heredity and supported the idea of evolutionary theory.

Without it many questions related to physical appearance and DNA may still be unanswered Mendel’s creativity led to the growth of society by producing a more knowledgeable

group of people. Although entertainment can be destructive without limits, it is a vital piece of society. Many forms of entertainment can actually contribute to the growth of society by sparking creativity. Entertainment negatively influencing the minds of society members should not be a concern because entertainment is mostly positively influential material. But as with many things, too much of one thing can cause problems.
