Dav Online Learning vs. Traditional Classroom Learning Online Learning versus Traditional Classroom Learning Today, many students are faced with the decision to go to a school where they sit in a classroom and learn from a teacher face to face, or go to school online where the teacher sends out assignments through email and discussion boards. Not only do students have this decision for college, but they now have it for high school as well. There are many pros and cons for both, and many factors to consider for each option.Although traditional learning is common and effective, online learning teaches a student structure and time management.

There are disadvantages to both online learning and traditional learning. When a student attends traditional classes, they may not have access to transportation. Their car may break down and they might be penalized for not attending class. If a student has a full time work schedule, school may be difficult to fit in with their everyday tasks and responsibilities such as; work and a family to take care of. The student has to follow a strict schedule; they may have to study daily and nightly. The traditional classroom may have over fifty other students attending; the professor might not know every student’s name or care whether the student knows the material. A major disadvantage is not being able to get one- on- one time with each student.

The student may not be as motivated because they have a professor telling them what they need to do constantly. The student may want more leeway or independence. I think that this is a major concern and disadvantage to the traditional learning style.

With online learning, not every student has access to a computer or an internet connection. This is a major problem because that is the only way of communication between the professor and student. The online student may be a procrastinator, and this could present a challenge for someone with poor time management skills. Everything an online student does is by self-motivation. An online student must have the skill to move forward with online learning. Online learning is mostly for visual learners. Kinesthetic learners may have a difficult time learning with all of the visual work required.

An online student must do everything on his or her own; sometimes independence may become an issue. There are advantages for both online and traditional learning as well. With traditional classroom learning, the student has the option to interact with other students face to face. It is the best option for kinesthetic and auditory learners. Some students learn better when talking face to face with others.

Students that may not have much self-motivation may need their professor telling them when things are due. Older students may appreciate classroom learning because it requires limited technology use. Students have the advantage of listening to a teacher talk and hear the books material in a different sense.Online learners have the advantage to study or do an assignment on their own time. They do have a time limit, but it is not as structured as traditional learning. The student

has the right to study, learn, or take a test wherever they feel comfortable. They may choose to take their test in the comfort of their home, or in a public library.

There is always interaction between the professor and the student; the professor has the chance to get to know all of their students through emailing, discussion boards and their personal assignments. If a professor or a student has any questions, they can get in touch with each other via email, instant message, by calling, or text message. Technology today has made huge improvements with communication.

An online student learns how to motivate themselves and learn time management skills. Going to school forces a student to learn time management, but with online learning, the student is very independent. Their schedule may consist of being a full time parent, full time employee, and full-time student. To keep up with this busy schedule, self-motivation and time management are important,. Online learning is actually a more efficient and effective way for students to learn. It facilities easy information transfer; while classroom learning encourages passive learning and ignore individual learning difference” (edudemic. com).

I believe that online learning is the most effective learning. I love to stay busy, learning online allows me to keep my full time job as well as spend time with my family with the advantage of finishing my school work on my own time. Online learning has taught me self motivation; keeping up with my busy schedule, I need to figure out what tasks and assignments come first.Although traditional learning is very common and effective, online learning teaches a student structure and time management skills. It helps them learn how to manage their time better. Learning is different for everyone, how to go about learning is based on one’s preference.
